Background
Born in Brooklyn to Puerto Rican parents and raised partly in Florida, Martinez played in the majors from 1986 to 2001 for the Cubs, Montreal Expos, Reds, Giants, White Sox, Devil Rays, Rangers, Blue Jays and Braves, finishing with a .276 average, 1,599 hits and 91 home runs. He became Joe Maddon's bench coach with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008 and followed Maddon to the Chicago Cubs after the 2014 season. In Washington his 2019 team recovered from a 19-31 start to win the pennant and the World Series; in Game 6 of that series he was ejected arguing an interference call, the first manager ejected from a World Series game since Bobby Cox in 1996. He spent eight seasons with the Nationals before being dismissed in the middle of the 2025 season.
