Joel Rechlicz

Joel Rechlicz (born June 14, 1987) is an American former professional ice hockey player best known for his role as an enforcer. He made history as the first player from the revived International Hockey League—originally the United Hockey League—to appear in an NHL game. His NHL career included stints with the New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals.
Rechlicz started his hockey journey at Brookfield Central High School in Wisconsin. At 16, he played for the St. Paul Lakers in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League during the 2003–04 season. He then had a brief three-game stint with the Santa Fe Roadrunners in the North American Hockey League in 2004–05, followed by a season and a half with the Northern Michigan Black Bears of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. In 2005–06, he made short stops with the Des Moines Buccaneers and Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League before a brief call-up to the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2006.
Rechlicz played major junior hockey for the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in the QMJHL. After the 2006–07 season, he turned professional with the Chicago Hounds of the UHL, playing two games. He began the 2007–08 season with the Kalamazoo Wings of the IHL, where he saw limited ice time over 25 games but earned a call-up to the Albany River Rats of the AHL.
In May 2008, Rechlicz signed a three-year entry-level contract with the New York Islanders. He made his NHL debut on March 5, 2009, recording an assist. That season, he played 17 NHL games while also spending time in the ECHL and AHL. The following season, he made the Islanders’ roster out of training camp and appeared in six NHL games before being assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for more playing time. On July 13, 2010, Rechlicz and the Islanders mutually agreed to terminate his contract for undisclosed reasons, and he was placed on unconditional waivers. He became an unrestricted free agent the next day.
On July 29, 2010, Rechlicz signed a one-year AHL deal with the Hershey Bears, later extended for the 2011–12 season. While with the Bears, the Washington Capitals called him up midway through the 2011–12 season. After three games, Washington placed him on waivers on February 4, 2012, and he returned to Hershey.
On July 12, 2012, Rechlicz signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent.
