Early Life & Family Foundations

Martin Fehérváry entered the world on 6 October 1999 in Bratislava, Slovakia, the son of Gabika and Mario. His childhood was shaped by a devastating loss: his mother succumbed to lung cancer in 2009, leaving him just nine years old. From that moment, his father shouldered the responsibility of raising Martin and his two siblings. Sport became a unifying force in the household, and it was the shared enthusiasm of his brother and father for athletics that led young Martin to first handle a hockey stick at four years old. He initially suited up for the SHKM Hodonín club, a program blending Czech and Slovak players, before enrolling at the Svišt Hockey School in Bratislava — an institution his own parents had established. For his first seven seasons on the ice, Fehérváry operated as a forward. Swedish Breakthrough & Record-Breaking Rise

NHL Draft & Washington Debut

Fehérváry's steady development in Sweden caught the eye of NHL scouts, and on draft day in 2018 the Washington Capitals selected him 46th overall in the NHL Entry Draft. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the franchise on 1 July 2018. After attending both rookie and main training camps, he was loaned back to HV71 for the 2018–19 season to continue his growth. The following October, he finally crossed the Atlantic and made his NHL debut on 2 October 2019 against the St. Louis Blues. At nineteen, he became the tenth Washington defenceman to play in the league as a teenager and the first since Connor Carrick in 2013–14. Across three games with the Capitals, he averaged 14 minutes 29 seconds of ice time per game and posted a 54.72 percent shot attempt rate at even strength. On 6 October 2019, he was reassigned to the Hershey Bears, the Capitals' AHL affiliate, where he would spend the bulk of his rookie campaign.

AHL Development & Playoff Emergence

With the Hershey Bears, Fehérváry was placed on the first defensive pairing alongside Christian Djoos, tasked with matching up against opposing teams' top defenders. In the first round against the New York Islanders, however, an injury in Game 3 ended his involvement, and Washington ultimately fell in Game 5.
