Jason Nicholas Doig, a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman, played in the NHL for the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes, New York Rangers, and Washington Capitals. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, to Michael and Paula Doig, who had immigrated from Jamaica to pursue degrees at Concordia University and McGill University. Growing up in the Montreal suburb of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, he attended St. Charles Elementary School, West Island College, and Vanier College. Besides hockey, he played high-level soccer for the West Island Lakers and received an invitation to represent Team Quebec.
As a youth, Doig played in the 1991 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the North Shore minor team. He later played for the Lac St-Louis Lions in the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League before joining the St-Jean Lynx of the QMJHL in 1993–94. That year, he helped Team Quebec win gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, scoring the tying and game-winning goals in the final against Team USA. The next season, he won another gold medal with Team Canada at the World Under-18 Tournament in Mexico City. Drafted 34th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995, he had 55 points and 259 penalty minutes with the Laval Titans that season and played in the CHL all-star game. In 1996, he returned to the QMJHL, leading the Granby Predateurs to the President’s Cup, winning the Guy Lafleur Trophy as playoff MVP, and then capturing the Memorial Cup, where he was named a first-team all-star. He also captained the West Team at the QMJHL all-star game. The following year, he won a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Switzerland.
Doig debuted in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets as an 18-year-old in 1995–96 and stayed with the franchise when it moved to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996–97. He was traded to the New York Rangers just before the March 1999 deadline. The 6'3" blueliner played for the Rangers and also saw time with their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, winning the Calder Cup in 2000. After two seasons in the Rangers organization, he was dealt to the Ottawa Senators, playing one season with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. He then joined the Washington Capitals in 2002–03, becoming a solid defenseman for the club while spending part of the season with the Portland Pirates in the AHL.
