Erik Gustafsson (ice hockey, born 1992)
Swedish defenceman who played for the Washington Capitals.
Erik Gustafsson (born 14 March 1992) is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman for the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, and Detroit Red Wings. The Edmonton Oilers selected him in the fourth round, 93rd overall, of the 2012 NHL entry draft.
Gustafsson started playing hockey with Nynäshamns IF and later joined Djurgårdens IF’s youth system. In 2008, he played for team Stockholm in the TV-pucken junior tournament, recording four assists. He spent the 2008–09 season with Djurgården’s under-18 team and the following season split time between the under-18 and J20 teams. By 2010–11, he had a regular spot on the J20 team, which won its division and finished third in the playoffs. In May 2011, he extended his contract with Djurgårdens IF through the 2013–14 season.
Gustafsson was called up for his Elitserien (now SHL) debut on 15 September 2011 against HV71 but did not play. He made his on-ice debut on 27 September 2011 against Brynäs IF, logging six minutes. He scored his first Elitserien goal on 26 December 2011 against Linköpings HC’s Fredrik Norrena. After Djurgårdens IF was relegated to the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan, he left the team on 4 April 2013 to sign with SHL club Frölunda HC.
After two seasons with Frölunda, and with the Oilers not retaining his NHL rights, Gustafsson signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks on 30 April 2015. He started the 2017–18 season with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs and was recalled to the NHL on 9 January 2018. He scored his first NHL goal and added an assist in a 7–3 loss to the New York Islanders on 20 January. On 6 March, he signed a two-year extension with Chicago.
In the 2019–20 season, Gustafsson posted 6 goals and 26 points in 59 games. On 24 February 2020, the Blackhawks traded him to the Calgary Flames for a 2020 third-round pick. He left the Flames as a free agent and signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on 12 October 2020. In the shortened 2020–21 season, he had 1 goal and 10 points in 24 games. On 12 April 2021, the Flyers traded him to the Montreal Canadiens for a seventh-round pick in 2022.
