Mangiapane went undrafted in the OHL Priority Draft and signed with the Barrie Colts as a free agent. He was named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team in 2013–14 and later reached 100 points in the 2014–15 season. Despite being unranked by NHL Central Scouting Bureau and going undrafted in 2014, he was selected by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round of the 2015 draft.
