Armoured warfare is the use of armoured fighting vehicles in modern warfare, a major component of modern methods of war. Its premise rests on the ability of troops to penetrate conventional defensive lines through manoeuvre by armoured units, relying on tanks and related vehicles such as infantry fighting vehicles, self-propelled artillery, and combat engineers. After the war, Fuller, B. H. Liddell Hart, and French commander Estienne continued pushing the idea of independent armoured forces capable of deep operations. Liddell Hart in particular wrote extensively on the subject, partly building on Fuller's earlier concepts. Yet the 1920s reality was harsh: armoured vehicles were as unreliable as early road transport in general, incapable of sustained operations. Mainstream thinking remained conservative, favouring integration of tanks into existing infantry and cavalry structures rather than the revolutionary independent formations the theorists dreamed of.

Industrial Scale and the First Tank Duel

The industrial dimension of armoured warfare in World War I reveals a stark asymmetry that shaped the conflict's outcome. British and French political and military leadership committed heavily to tank production in 1917, resulting in a sharp surge of available vehicles by 1918. France ultimately fielded over 4,400 tanks of various types, and Britain more than 2,500. Germany, by contrast, produced a mere twenty A7V tanks during the entire war, and only late in the conflict. Despite this disparity, the German A7V made history in April 1918 at the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, where three of them accidentally encountered three British Mark IV tanks in what is recognised as the first tank-versus-tank engagement in history.
