Airborne forces are ground combat units transported by aircraft and deployed into battle zones via parachute drop, known as paratroopers. Their primary advantage is the ability to enter combat zones without a land passage, enabling rapid vertical envelopment behind enemy lines, though they typically lack supplies for prolonged combat and are used to establish airheads for larger forces.

The concept of airborne attack was envisioned by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, shortly after the first manned hot air balloon flight. Early modern proposals included Winston Churchill's 1917 plan and a 1918 U.S. operation near Metz, which was never executed. The first known combat paratroop drop was by the Soviet Union in 1929. Italy did use paratroopers in combat drops during World War II, such as in Yugoslavia in 1941 and North Africa. The Soviet Union also experimented, demonstrating corps-size drops in 1935, which drew interest from Nazi Germany, leading to a parachute school established in 1936.

The core tactical philosophy behind airborne forces rests on a single transformative principle: the ability to project combat power directly into hostile territory without traversing any ground route. As long as aircraft can reach the target airspace, a substantial force can materialize behind enemy lines within hours—or even minutes—bypassing every conventional approach. This concept, termed vertical envelopment, fundamentally altered how commanders thought about the geometry of battle. However, the doctrine carries inherent constraints. Airdropped troops arrive with limited supplies, making them ill-suited for extended engagements. Their standard role is therefore to seize and hold an airhead, a forward foothold from which larger formations and logistics can be flown in. To compensate for the absence of heavy equipment in initial drops, certain infantry fighting vehicles have been adapted for parachute delivery alongside their infantry crews. The size of any airborne formation is ultimately capped only by the number and capacity of available transport aircraft, making airlift availability the single most critical logistical variable.

From Balloon Fears to First Jumps

The idea of soldiers descending from the sky has a surprisingly long intellectual pedigree. In 1784, just months after the first manned hot-air balloon flight, Benjamin Franklin warned that thousands of balloons carrying two men each could wreak an infinite deal of mischief on a nation before defenders could assemble. Decades later, during World War I, Winston Churchill proposed creating an airborne force to strike behind German lines, and in late 1918, Major Lewis H. Brereton and Brigadier General Billy Mitchell planned to drop elements of the U.S. 1st Division behind German positions near Metz using converted bombers. The war ended before the planned February 1919 date arrived. The first genuine paratroop drop came from Italy in November 1927, and within a few years the country had organized battalions into the Folgore and Nembo divisions. The Soviet Union pursued more ambitious experiments, planning to airdrop entire units with vehicles and light tanks, and demonstrated corps-size drops to foreign observers, including Archibald Wavell, at Kiev maneuvers in 1935. Germany, among the observing parties, took particular note.

The Fallschirmjäger and the War's Opening Blows

Within the German armed forces, multiple branches attempted to build their own paratroop units, creating organizational confusion that was eventually resolved by placing Luftwaffe General Kurt Student in overall command of the Fallschirmjäger. Their first major combat employment came during Operation Weserübung, the invasions of Norway and Denmark in April 1940. In Denmark, a small detachment seized the Storstrøm Bridge on Masnedø island, while another group captured the Aalborg airfield, a vital staging point for operations over Norway. In Oslo, a company dropped onto an undefended airstrip, and by early afternoon German reinforcements had secured the capital, though the Norwegian government had already fled. In the Battle of France, Brandenburg Regiment members landed in Fieseler Fi 156 Storch light aircraft on bridges south of the 10th Panzer Division's route through the Ardennes. Perhaps most dramatically, on the morning of 10 May 1940, a small group of glider-borne troops landed atop the Belgian fortress of Eben Emael and disabled its defenses, demonstrating the shock value of precise airborne insertion against fortified positions.

Vulnerability, Law, and the Shift to Air Assault

Paratroopers face a uniquely exposed moment during their descent: their slow parachute fall makes them vulnerable to ground-based anti-air fire. To mitigate this risk, combat jumps are conducted at low altitude, typically 400 to 500 feet, and usually at night, with drop zones placed close to or directly over the target when defenses are light. Weather conditions add another layer of danger, threatening both the jumpers and the transport aircraft, which makes meticulous planning essential to any airborne operation's success. On the legal front, Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions extends protection to parachutists who are in distress, but it does not grant the same shield to airborne troops who are actively engaged in combat. Since World War II, advances in vertical takeoff and landing technology, encompassing helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft, have expanded operational flexibility considerably. Air assaults have become the preferred insertion method in recent conflicts, yet traditional parachute drops remain maintained as a rapid-response capability, ensuring that troops can be placed on the ground anywhere in the world within a matter of hours for a wide range of missions.
