Air supremacy

Air supremacy is the top tier of aerial control, meaning one side has total command of the sky. NATO and the U.S. Department of Defense define it as a level of air superiority where the enemy air force can no longer interfere effectively. This state allows for intensified bombing runs, close air support for ground troops, paratroop drops, supply airdrops, and transport flights moving personnel and equipment. However, holding air supremacy does not automatically mean friendly aircraft will suffer few losses; opponents may use unconventional tactics or exploit vulnerabilities. For instance, during the Kosovo conflict, NATO forces had air superiority but still lost a stealth strike aircraft to a Yugoslav ground-based air defense system considered outdated. In asymmetric wars like those in Iraq and Afghanistan, poorly equipped ground forces have sometimes shot down aircraft despite facing overwhelming air supremacy, and insurgents found more success attacking coalition planes on the ground than in the air.

There are several levels of air control. Air supremacy is the highest, where one side holds complete control. Air superiority is the next level, where a side has a more favorable position than its opponent, defined as a degree of dominance that allows operations without prohibitive interference from enemy air forces. A favorable air situation means enemy air effort is too weak to harm friendly operations. Air parity occurs when neither side controls the skies, also called mutual air denial if both sides make regular aerial operations nearly impossible due to effective anti-air defenses on land or sea.

Gaining air supremacy does not rely solely on shooting down enemy planes in dogfights. Air supremacy sits at the apex of a graded hierarchy that military theorists have long used to describe a belligerent's command of the skies. At the top, air supremacy means the opposing air force simply cannot mount effective interference. Just below that, air superiority grants a side enough dominance in air battle to let its land, sea, and air forces operate at a given time and place without prohibitive opposition. A favorable air situation is a weaker state where enemy air effort is insufficient to prejudice friendly operations, while air parity—sometimes called mutual air denial—describes a stalemate in which neither side can conduct regular aerial operations because of effective ground or sea-based defenses. Crucially, this spectrum functions as a zero-sum contest: every degree of control one force gains is a degree the other loses. Winning the Skies from the Ground

The Israeli Air Force demonstrated this principle in 1967 during Operation Focus, when an outnumbered force delivered a crippling blow to Egyptian, Jordanian, and Syrian airfields at the outset of the Six-Day War, securing Israeli air supremacy. Supremacy Without Safety

Holding air supremacy does not immunize a force from loss. Hostile opponents routinely exploit unconventional tactics or identify vulnerabilities that even the most advanced air power cannot fully neutralize. A stark illustration came during the Kosovo campaign, when NATO forces—despite commanding clear air superiority—lost a stealth strike aircraft to a Yugoslav ground-based air-defense system that was widely regarded as obsolete. Asymmetric conflicts have repeatedly produced similar outcomes: relatively poorly equipped ground forces have managed aircraft kills against overwhelming aerial dominance. In both the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan, insurgents found greater success attacking coalition aircraft parked on the ground than engaging them in flight. The September 2012 Camp Bastion raid in Afghanistan saw fifteen fedayeen destroy or severely damage eight US Marine Harrier jump jets, a shock severe enough that pilots were pressed into infantry duty for the first time in seventy years. In 2007, four Apache helicopters were destroyed on the ground by insurgents armed with mortars, aided unintentionally by geotagged photographs published online by coalition soldiers.

The Birth of Aerial Dominance in the Great War

The First World War established the foundational patterns of aerial dominance that still shape doctrine today. The conflict produced numerous firsts, including the deployment of aircraft fitted with machine guns and the first successful engagement using a synchronisation gun on the afternoon of 1 July 1915. Throughout the war, control of the Western Front skies shifted repeatedly between the German Empire and the Allied powers, revealing that air supremacy was neither permanent nor easily won. Early in the conflict, losses were heaviest among new pilots, many of whom survived only a day or two before being shot down. The Fokker Scourge period was particularly devastating, and its survivors went on to lead the specialised fighter units that emerged in response. These dedicated squadrons, commanded by highly experienced aviators, dramatically increased the effectiveness of fighter operations and set the template for the organised air forces that would later define the hierarchy of air control.
