The Guild 2
A life simulation set in fifteenth-century Renaissance Europe.
The Guild 2 (Die Gilde 2 in German) is a life simulation video game created by 4HEAD Studios and released by JoWooD Productions. As the second game in The Guild series, it comes after Europa 1400: The Guild and before The Guild 3. It launched globally in November 2006 for Windows. Set in fictional versions of fifteenth-century European provinces, the game centers on simulating Renaissance-era life. Players begin by creating a custom character, adjusting attributes, skills, and special abilities that can be improved over time.
The game runs on the Gamebryo engine and offers open-ended gameplay. It received average reviews and was nominated for a "Best Sound Award". Three standalone DLC add-ons were released: Pirates of the European Seas, The Guild 2: Venice, and The Guild 2: Renaissance. These were later bundled as The Guild: Complete Collection in January 2013.
**Gameplay** The Guild 2 is a real-time life simulation with nonlinear play from a bird's-eye view, featuring zoom controls. It introduces construction and management, tactical role-playing, and social simulation. Players control a character avatar with RPG-style ability scores, classes, and special abilities in European cities. The game uses mouse and keyboard input. Like its predecessor, character classes determine which buildings can be built and upgraded, affecting available businesses. At the start, players customize their character by choosing appearance, first and last name, class, sex, zodiac sign, religion, and spending experience on talents. Leveling up improves skills, which are numerical measures of ability.
**Modes** The game includes an extended single-player campaign and a comprehensive tutorial set in the 15th century, plus crafted scenario maps for a German Hanse campaign in Hamburg and Lübeck, Nottinghamshire and Sherwood Forest, and Lyon. Available modes are: Dynasty mode (open-ended with no set goal), Extinction (eliminate all rival dynasties), Time Limit (play until a set time, then compare profit points), Pro team (a random mission for each team), and All teams with the same mission (players choose an assignment with varying objectives and can adjust economic, social, and political conditions). The medieval legal system, town politics, and family rivalries range from friendliness to open warfare. All modes have difficulty settings from easy to hard.
