Europa 1400: The Guild

A medieval life simulation with nonlinear gameplay and 12 professions.

Europa 1400: The Guild

Europa 1400: The Guild (known in German as *Die Gilde*) is a 2002 simulation game created by 4HEAD Studios and released by JoWooD Productions. As the first title in the Guild series, it launched for Windows in October 2002. The game blends medieval life simulation with real-time strategy, role-playing, and non-linear gameplay, all powered by a 3D engine. Set across historical European cities, players work to build a family dynasty from humble beginnings, starting with a single character of modest means. A dozen different professions are available to choose from.

An expansion pack, *Europa 1400: Trade, Greediness and Intrigue*, was released in March 2003, produced by 4HEAD Studios and developed by JoWooD Productions. The *Guild Gold Edition*, bundling the original game with this expansion, followed in November 2005. A Nintendo DS title based on the series, *The Guild DS*, arrived in 2009—though it was a different game, not a direct port of the 2002 PC original.

**Gameplay** *Europa 1400: The Guild* is a life simulation that incorporates real-time, role-playing, and non-linear elements, all presented within three-dimensionally rendered open-world environments. In this single-player experience, the player controls a self-created protagonist with a unique name. The full 3D engine offers a bird's-eye camera view that can be zoomed and moved freely around a town, allowing close inspection of buildings, NPCs, or objects. Entering a building provides a close-up interior view, where players can interact with contents, inhabitants, or exterior elements. The protagonist is never visible on screen; players click on screen areas to control the viewpoint using the mouse and hotkeys, exploring specific places and objects. The interface uses left-click to select an item or action and right-click to deselect.

Players can choose from 12 career paths, either following a series of missions or playing the game as an open-ended simulation. A multiplayer mode supports up to eight players. As the family business and social standing grow, more options become available, including high political rank.

**Development** The core development team at 4HEAD Studios in Hannover began with just two employees. Concept planning started in 1997, and development began in autumn 1997 under Managing Director Lars Martensen. By spring 2002, the team had grown to ten members.
