Conflict: Desert Storm II
Tactical shooter sequel set during the Persian Gulf War.
Conflict: Desert Storm II (released in North America as Conflict: Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad) is a tactical shooter from Pivotal Games. It came out on Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube, following the first Conflict: Desert Storm as the second game in the series.
The game takes place during the Persian Gulf War and follows Alpha One, a four-man special forces team from either the British SAS or US Delta Force. Players control one soldier at a time but can issue remote orders to the rest of the squad. Two players can play together, each handling two soldiers, while the GameCube and Xbox versions support up to four players. Tactics range from direct assaults to stealth, facing off against Iraqi military forces. Team members earn experience, leading to promotions and medals for good performance. Licensed weapons like the M16 assault rifle and vehicles such as the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle appear. Orders like "follow me" or "fire at will" can be given to squadmates, and players can switch between them freely. Each soldier has a specialty: Foley is the sniper, Jones handles explosives, Connor uses heavy weapons, and Bradley leads the team and calls in airstrikes. The Xbox version let players download extra maps via Xbox Live.
The plot begins on August 2, 1990, when Iraq invades Kuwait, prompting a coalition of over 100 countries to intervene. Early in Kuwait's liberation, Alpha One is sent to rescue Delta Two, another special forces team trapped behind Iraqi lines at Al-Hadar. With gunship support, they breach the city, find Delta Two's last known position, and search overnight before locating them after fighting through Iraqi troops and armor. They escort Delta Two to an evacuation point at an Iraqi communications post, destroy it after extraction, and leave. Next, Alpha One destroys an Iraqi radar site and fuel dump, but after succeeding, they are surrounded by troops, tanks, and gunships. Bradley orders surrender, and they are taken prisoner and interrogated. Stealth fighters bomb the prison, allowing escape. Before returning to allied lines, they disarm Sarin gas and destroy SCUD missiles and launchers at another site. As Kuwait's liberation nears, retreating Iraqis set oil wells on fire. Alpha One disarms explosives on several wells, then links up with the 2nd Marines.
