Lore & Background

The game entered development around March 2002 for Microsoft Windows under the title Midway: Naval Battles, with a planned late 2003 to early 2004 release. After SCi Games acquired publishing rights, it was rebranded as Battlestations: Midway, and versions for Gizmondo, PlayStation 2, and Xbox were commissioned but later cancelled in favor of an Xbox 360 release. The single-player campaign contains 11 historically based missions from the American perspective, following Henry Walker and his friend Donald Locklear. The game features appearances by John F. Kennedy commanding PT-109 and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Reader's Guide

Battlestations: Midway is significant for its hybrid gameplay that combines real-time tactics with direct unit control, a design that was relatively uncommon at the time. The PC version received generally favorable reviews, while the Xbox 360 version received average reviews according to Metacritic. The game's multiplayer, powered by GameSpy, was shut down in December 2012, leaving players unable to play online. However, the game remains accessible through the Xbox backwards compatibility program, allowing purchase and play on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles. A sequel, Battlestations: Pacific, was released in May 2009 for Windows and Xbox 360, featuring twice as many missions and the ability to play as the Japanese. The game's downloadable content, the Iowa Mission Pack, was released on March 28, 2003, and is preserved for the PC version via Mod DB.
