War Front: Turning Point
An alternate WWII RTS with experimental units and a branching campaign.
Last updated
War Front: Turning Point is a real-time strategy game set in an alternate World War II where Adolf Hitler is assassinated early in the war. Under a new chancellor, Germany occupies Great Britain, but is eventually defeated, allowing the Soviet Union to advance into Western Europe. Developed by Hungarian studio Digital Reality and published by CDV, it was released in 2007 for Microsoft Windows.
Factions
The Western Allies faction is a coalition of the United States, United Kingdom, and Free France, fielding a mix of units such as the British Matilda tank and American M26 Pershing. Their buildings are self-powered, eliminating the need for power plants, and they possess a superior air force with aircraft like the P-38 Lightning bomber, P-51 Mustang fighters, and attack helicopters. The Allies can deploy an atomic bomb via a Northrop YB-35 and an earthquake bomb via a Halifax bomber. Their experimental unit is the O.R.B., an APC with a force-field generator that protects nearby units from low to medium attacks.
The German faction represents the Wehrmacht under new leadership after Hitler's death, focusing on firepower with strong ground armor including the Panzer VIII Maus, Elefant tank hunter, and Tiger tank. German air units include Me 262 fighters, Junkers Ju 390s, and Horten Ho 229s, with V-1 flying bombs upgradeable to V-2 rockets. German experimental units include jet pack infantry with flamethrowers, heavy exoskeleton mechs, Sonic tanks using sonic waves, and a Giant Zeppelin with air-to-ground cannons.
Campaign
The campaign begins 1000 days after the German invasion of Great Britain, with Oberstleutnant Roland Hellmann under General Hardt taking control of London. While pushing Allied resistance north, Hardt is revealed to be working with the German Resistance led by Dietrich Preiss, though Hellmann is uninterested in their methods. Hellmann is sent to rescue Elsa Adler, a female German spy behind Soviet lines on the Eastern Front, where the Soviets are using weapons to cool the environment.
Adler is pursued by Aleksei Mikhalkov of the Red Army. After her rescue, Adler reveals Soviet plans to build super-weapons and conquer Germany. Hellmann and Adler join Preiss's resistance, and with American Colonel John Lynch, they target the current Nazi leaders to make peace with Britain and the Western Allies to suppress Soviet conflict. This succeeds despite Nazi attempts to destroy Berlin.
At Berlin, General Wells of Britain arrives to sign a peace treaty with Hardt, but a surprise Soviet attack interrupts. The earlier reports Adler obtained were fabricated by the Soviets to trick the German Resistance into killing the chancellor, causing a civil war while the Soviets conquer Eastern Europe. Hellmann secures a secret German weapons base, and during a Soviet push, Preiss is captured and used as bait; he is eventually rescued.
Reception
The game received average reviews on Metacritic. X-Play noted that the alternate history kept the setting interesting without becoming overly wacky. GameSpot praised the balance of real and fictional units, stating battles remained grounded in real-world combat.
However, many reviewers found the RTS gameplay conventional despite the subject matter. IGN said the game was not particularly new but executed tradition solidly with a decent action atmosphere. PC Gamer called it solid and entertaining but far less original than it purported to be.
Eurogamer satirized review conventions while reviewing the title. GameSpy criticized the first-person shooter aspect as useless in a fast-paced game and noted it could slow lesser computers. Graphically, GameSpot described the dark, gritty look as a treat for the eyes but sometimes so dark and dense that units were obscured.
