Panzer Campaigns

Operational level wargame series spanning World War II fronts.

Last updated

Panzer Campaigns is a series of operational level wargames covering various fronts of World War II. Originally developed by John Tiller Software, the series was later acquired by Wargame Design Studio in 2021 following Tiller's death. The series includes 33 titles, with games originally published by HPS Simulations until 2010.

Games

One title covers the First Battle of Smolensk at battalion level, with a full campaign map of 200x300 km divided into 1 km hexes. A turn represents two hours of daytime or four hours of night, a scale generally maintained in later games. Another title covers the initial landings and breakthrough of Operation Overlord at company level.

The Wargamer noted that the Germans' ability to delay the Allies in the bocage could only be reproduced using alternate engagement rules that prohibit advance and assault in the same phase. Normandy '44 was nominated by Computer Games Magazine editors for their 2000 Wargame of the Year award. A game covering the Soviet spring offensive and German counter-attack Operation Frederick during the Second Battle of Kharkov was reviewed by The Wargamer, who found the terrain behind the front lines barren due to the abstraction of non-fire support units, but called it an entry-level wargame with a solid, narrowly focused research base.

The reviewer noted that the historical order of battle from David Glantz's publications required adjustment for duplications. A North Africa title covers battles from Rommel's breakthrough through Operation Crusader, with no grand campaign but seven longer scenarios and fifty smaller ones. Some scenarios include explicit supply depots with limited stocks that can be captured, and units can be broken down to company level.
