Plot and gameplay
The player controls Matt Tucker, a famous burglar recently released from prison in Fortune Hills. Starting as a small-time crook, Matt must work his way back to his former glory by performing burglaries, collecting loot and fame, and selling stolen goods to buy better tools. The ultimate goal is the Ministry of Light. Gameplay is divided into planning mode, conducted from Matt's apartment, and live mode, where the plan is executed. Locations feature patrolling guards, security systems, locked doors, and cabinets. Tools vary in usefulness and noise level. The game allows free city exploration via taxis, with buildings to enter for tools, accomplices, or observation.
Reception
The Sting! received mixed reviews, with a Metacritic score of 73% from nine critics. Reviewers praised the light-hearted tone and unique theme. IGN noted the rarity of cartoony 3D games that bring colorful worlds to life and found the gameplay interesting. However, several problems lowered the score, including clipping issues in the graphics engine, a slow pace, and problematic pathfinding AI.
