Gameplay

Anger Foot is a fast-paced action game where players navigate levels by kicking down doors to surprise and eliminate enemies, aiming to complete each level as quickly as possible. The protagonist's foot serves as the primary weapon, used to break doors, destroy obstacles, and eradicate foes. Additional weapons and power-ups can be collected during levels, and players unlock and upgrade sneakers at the end of each level, each pair offering a unique attribute. Environments include slums, sewers, and skyscrapers, each with diverse enemy types. The game rewards speed and efficiency, accompanied by a hardstyle soundtrack.

Plot

The game is set in the dystopian Shit City, where crime is encouraged and controlled by four gangs: the Violence Gang, the Pollution Gang, the Business Gang, and the Debauchery Gang, all overseen by the Crime Minister. The protagonist, Anger Foot, visits a slum to buy valuable sneakers, kicking faces in the process. After placing the new sneakers with his three other prized pairs at home, a helicopter rips out his entire collection wall. He learns the four pairs have been distributed among the four gangs and sets out to retrieve them. After defeating the bosses Goo Cop, The Sludge Baron, The CEO, and Pizza Pig, the Crime Minister contacts him, revealing the theft was his plan to eliminate the gangs and transform Shit City into Nice City, a utopia without crime. He asks Anger Foot to kick his sneaker collection into a fireplace. If the player does so, Anger Foot is shown a month later living alone in Nice City, dressed uniformly in loafers and working a desk job. If the player kicks the Crime Minister through the window, Shit City remains unchanged, but Anger Foot takes his sneakers home and enjoys movie night with his girlfriend.

Development

Anger Foot was developed by Free Lives, an indie studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. The game originated from a 7-day game development challenge on Itch.io called 7dfps in 2020. It was officially announced at the Devolver Digital Showcase during Summer Game Fest in June 2022, with an initial 2023 release window, but was delayed to 2024 in August 2022. Free Lives and Devolver Digital have previously partnered on titles such as Broforce, Genital Jousting, Gorn, Terra Nil, Stick it to the Stickman, and Cricket Through the Ages. The game appeared at the WASD gaming expo in London in April 2024.
