History
VfB Stuttgart Amateure first competed in the third-division Amateurliga Württemberg in 1959–60, winning the league that season. After the league split, the team played in the Amateurliga Nordwürttemberg, where it dominated from 1962 to 1967 with four league titles in five seasons, though promotion to professional leagues was barred. It remained in that league until 1978, adding another title in 1971 and generally finishing near the top, but missed qualification for the new Oberliga Baden-Württemberg by one point when a top-five finish was required.
The club won the German amateur football championship in 1963 and 1980, defeating VfL Wolfsburg and FC Augsburg in the finals, and finished runner-up in 1971 after losing to SC Jülich 1910. After finishing second in the Verbandsliga Württemberg in 1979, the team was promoted to the Oberliga, winning that league in its first season but again barred from promotion. It suffered relegation in 1988, returned to the Oberliga in 1990, and won promotion to the Regionalliga Süd in 1998 after an Oberliga championship.
The club dropped back to Oberliga level in 2002 but won another Oberliga title in 2003, spending the next five seasons in the Regionalliga. In 2008 it qualified for the new 3. Liga, where it played eight seasons as a mid- to lower-table side before being relegated to the Regionalliga Südwest at the end of 2015–16 after finishing last.
Relationship with VfB Stuttgart
VfB Stuttgart II functions as the reserve team for VfB Stuttgart, drawing primarily from recent graduates of Stuttgart's youth system and older players not yet ready for the first team. Impressive performances at the reserve level often lead to call-ups; for instance, Sami Khedira made nine league appearances for Stuttgart II in 2006–07 before making his Bundesliga debut on 1 October 2006.
Ground
The Robert-Schlienz-Stadion, with 5,000 standing places, was the team's home until 2008 and again from 2016 to 2024. Originally called the Amateur-Stadion, it was renamed after VfB player Robert Schlienz following his death in June 1995; the first match played there was a youth championship game on 25 June 1995. Because the stadium did not meet 3. Liga requirements, the team moved to the Gazi-Stadion auf der Waldau after promotion in 2008. Following relegation to the Regionalliga Südwest, home matches returned to the Robert-Schlienz-Stadion from 2016. For the 2024–25 season in the 3. Liga, the team plays at the WIRmachenDRUCK Arena in Aspach, which holds 10,001 spectators.
