Battle
On 18 September, the Narentines, led by Duke Branimir, organized for battle. Doge Candiano commanded 12 well-equipped large ships and was confident. Branimir likely had a similar fleet and intended to ambush the Venetians to avoid heavy artillery damage. The Narentines first sent a few ships toward the Venetian fleet as part of an ambush. The battle initially favored the Venetians until the rest of the Narentine fleet appeared and surrounded them, forcing the Venetians toward Makarska. The Venetians were ultimately defeated.
