City National Arena

City National Arena serves as both the practice facility and team headquarters for the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. Located in Summerlin South, a Las Vegas suburb, it opened on September 18, 2017. The building houses the team’s administrative offices, a team store, and a MacKenzie River Pizza, Grill & Pub restaurant, among other amenities. From 2020 to 2024, it was also the home rink for the Las Vegas Thunderbirds.

Construction began on October 5, 2016, shortly after the NHL awarded Las Vegas an expansion franchise for the 2017–18 season. The facility was also designed to serve as a hub for recreational and youth hockey in Southern Nevada. In July 2017, the Golden Knights signed a multi-year naming rights deal with City National Bank, branding it City National Arena. The arena opened after 11 months of construction, and county commissioner Steve Sisolak declared that day “City National Arena Day.”

The arena is home to the UNLV Skatin’ Rebels hockey program, which moved there after spending the previous decade splitting time between the Las Vegas Ice Center and SoBe Ice Arena. This move allowed the Rebels to advance to ACHA Division 1. Their first game at the arena was on September 22, 2017, a 3–0 loss to the University of Colorado. The facility has also hosted showcases for the Western States Hockey League.

The Vegas Golden Knights own the facility, which sits on land owned by the Howard Hughes Corporation. The primary designer was Murray Craven, the team’s first senior vice president and a 17-year NHL veteran, who incorporated what he considered the best features from other practice facilities around the league. The two-story, 146,000-square-foot building includes two regulation rinks, team locker rooms for both the Golden Knights and UNLV, sports medicine facilities, an equipment room, video room, player lounge, coaches’ offices, a restaurant and bar, team store, skate rental, and snack bar. Team offices occupy the second floor. Players have frequently praised the facility.

The Golden Knights practice and UNLV plays on Rink 1, branded as Summerlin Hospital Rink. Both rinks seat 600. Rink 2 is branded as the Ghost Energy Rink. Shortly after City National Arena opened in 2017, Las Vegas Ballpark was built on land behind the building for the Las Vegas Aviators baseball team.
