The result premiered on April 3, 2004, immediately after the Kids' Choice Awards, and introduced viewers to a fourteen-year-old in the fictional town of Amity Park whose eccentric ghost-hunting parents, Jack and Maddie, had built a portal to the Ghost Zone. The device sat inert until Danny, goaded by his best friends Sam and Tucker, flipped the "On" switch his parents had carelessly overlooked. Ectoplasm flooded his DNA, and the boy who had worn a black-and-white jumpsuit emerged as a snow-haired, neon-eyed half-ghost. Vlad Masters, an old college friend of Jack Fenton who had become a half-ghost in his own right, served as the series' true arch-rival, a mirror image of Danny's predicament twisted into villainy. Valerie Gray, a vengeful ghost hunter, added a layer of romantic tension during a brief stretch in which she became Danny's love interest before her obsession with capturing him consumed the relationship. That fandom has produced a full ecosystem of video games, home-video releases, toys, and assorted merchandise. In recent years the Go Ghost Again Movement crystallized the community's desire for a revival, spawning a Change.org petition that gathered thousands of signatures. The series also found a wide international audience, airing on CBC, YTV, and Nickelodeon in Canada and on the UK's CITV as part of its Action Stations morning block in 2008. After cancellation, reruns continued on Nicktoons until March 31, 2021, and the show briefly returned to TeenNick's NickSplat block in January 2019 before episodes stopped airing on February 1, 2022, following the discontinuation of NickRewind.
