Chrono Cross

A 1999 role-playing game set in the world of Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Cross

Chrono Cross is a role-playing game for the PlayStation, released in 1999 and published by Square. It takes place in the same universe as the 1995 Super Nintendo title Chrono Trigger. The project was led by writer and director Masato Kato, who collaborated with several Chrono Trigger veterans, including art director Yasuyuki Honne and composer Yasunori Mitsuda. Character designs were handled by Nobuteru Yūki. The story follows a teenage boy named Serge, who discovers an alternate reality where he died as a child. He sets out to learn why the two worlds split, aided by a thief named Kid and a large cast of characters across the tropical El Nido archipelago. Serge seeks the mysterious Frozen Flame while being pursued by the shadowy antagonist Lynx. The game launched in Japan in 1999 and in North America in 2000, earning widespread praise—including a perfect 10.0 from GameSpot—and selling 1.5 million copies worldwide by 2003. It was later re-released as a Greatest Hits title and in Japan as part of the Ultimate Hits series. A digital version arrived on the PlayStation Network in Japan in July 2011, followed by North America four months later. A remaster, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, came out on April 7, 2022, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One.

In terms of gameplay, Chrono Cross is a standard role-playing game with a few twists. Players control Serge as he explores the world on foot or by boat, navigating an overworld map similar to Chrono Trigger’s. The island features villages, outdoor areas, and dungeons rendered in three dimensions. There are no random encounters; enemies appear on field maps and can be avoided or engaged. When a battle starts, the screen shifts to a turn-based system where players can attack, use Elements, defend, or flee. Each action reduces hit points, and if the entire party falls, the game ends unless a story battle allows defeat. Developers aimed to innovate, letting players flee from any fight, including boss battles and the final encounter.

The Element system handles all magic, items, and character-specific abilities. Elements must be equipped on a grid unique to each character, with eight tiers of power. Higher-tier Elements require matching grid slots. Elements come in six paired colors: red (fire) opposes blue (water), green (wind) opposes yellow (earth), and white (light) opposes black (da

Lore & Background

Chrono Cross focuses on a teenage boy named Serge and a theme of parallel worlds. Faced with an alternate reality in which he died as a child, Serge endeavors to discover the truth of the two worlds' divergence. The flashy thief Kid and many other characters assist him in his travels around the tropical archipelago El Nido. Struggling to uncover his past and find the mysterious Frozen Flame, Serge is chiefly challenged by Lynx, a shadowy antagonist working to apprehend him. The game features a diverse cast of 46 party members (Serge plus 45 recruitable characters), each with an innate Element affinity and three unique special abilities. Since it is impossible to obtain all 45 recruitable characters in one playthrough, players must replay the game to witness everything.

Reader's Guide

Chrono Cross is significant as a sequel to Chrono Trigger, sharing its world and some design staff. It innovated within the role-playing genre with its Element system, which handles all magic, consumable items, and character-specific abilities. Elements are divided into six paired oppositional types, each with a natural effect, and a field effect tracks Element color used in battle. The game also features a stamina bar that governs action frequency, and a leveling system based on defeating bosses rather than experience points. The existence of two major parallel dimensions plays a significant role, requiring players to go back and forth between worlds to recruit party members, obtain items, and advance the plot. The game includes a New Game+ option and twelve endings. Chrono Cross was re-released for the PlayStation Network in Japan in July 2011 and in North America four months later. A remaster titled Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition was released on April 7, 2022, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One.
