True Detective season 4

The fourth season of *True Detective*, the anthology crime drama series, arrived on HBO on January 14, 2024. Titled *Night Country*, it takes place in the fictional Alaskan town of Ennis, located north of the Arctic Circle, during a period of polar night. The plot centers on the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis play Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro. Issa López created *Night Country*, acting as showrunner, writer, and director. It marks the first season without Nic Pizzolatto’s direct involvement, though he remains credited as an executive producer. The season earned widespread critical praise, became the most-watched installment of the series, and was HBO’s most-viewed limited or anthology series of 2024. The American Film Institute ranked it among the top ten television programs of the year. It received 19 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, the most of any *True Detective* season. Foster won Outstanding Lead Actress. Other nominations included Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor (for John Hawkes), Outstanding Supporting Actress (for Reis), and Outstanding Directing and Writing (for López). At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, it received three nominations, including Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film, with Foster winning Best Actress. Initially, Nic Pizzolatto was involved in planning a fourth season, but Issa López was eventually chosen as showrunner, writing and directing the entire season. Pizzolatto stayed on as an executive producer, his first season without a writing credit. Before the third season aired, Pizzolatto mentioned having a "really, really wild" idea for a fourth season, but later dropped it after discussing a new concept with an unnamed actor. In July 2019, HBO president Casey Bloys said they would talk if Pizzolatto had an idea he was excited about, but were not rushing. In January 2020, Pizzolatto signed a deal with Fox 21 and FX Productions, casting doubt on his involvement. By 2021, HBO was exploring ideas with other writers, including Lucía Puenzo and Sam Levinson. Bloys later hinted at something in the *True Detective* area they felt good about. In March 2022, HBO announced a fourth season in development, carrying the subtitle *Night Country*—a first for the series.
