Lore & Background
Harrelson was the season's next major casting choice after McConaughey and was brought on to play Hart at McConaughey's request. He said he joined partly to work again with people he had collaborated with on the 2012 HBO film Game Change. The season's anthology format meant the actors only had to commit to a single season, which let Pizzolatto attract film stars who usually avoid television.
Reader's Guide
Critics often credited the two leads for the season's success: Rotten Tomatoes' consensus says the performances of Harrelson and McConaughey reel the viewer in, and RogerEbert.com's Brian Tallerico argued that much of the season's balance came from both actors playing against type in serious roles.
