Kristiāns Rubīns
Latvian defenceman who helped win his country's first World Championship medal.
Kristiāns Rubīns (born 11 December 1997) is a Latvian professional ice hockey defenceman for HC Plzeň in the Czech Extraliga. He played a key role in Latvia’s first-ever World Championship medal in 2023.
Rubīns began his career with Latvian junior clubs before moving to Sweden at age 15 to join VIK Västerås HK’s junior team. He made his professional debut in the HockeyAllsvenskan during the 2014–15 season, playing ten games without scoring. The next season, he spent most of his time with the junior club and appeared in only four Allsvenskan games, again scoreless. In the Canadian Hockey League’s Import Draft, the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL selected him in the first round, 16th overall. In his first season with Medicine Hat (2016–17), he played 49 games, recording three goals and 21 assists for 24 points. The Tigers won the Central Division but lost to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the second playoff round, where Rubīns had seven assists in eleven games. The following season, he played 60 games, scoring seven goals and 27 points. The Tigers made the playoffs again but were eliminated by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round; Rubīns had one goal and four points in six playoff games.
On 3 August 2018, Rubīns signed a professional contract with the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL. He scored the first goal in franchise history in a 3–2 loss to the Florida Everblades. In 56 games during the 2018–19 season, he had two goals and 16 points. While with the Growlers, he also signed with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL in October 2018, making 15 appearances and recording three assists. The Growlers finished first in the North Division and won the Kelly Cup in their inaugural season; Rubīns added one goal and three points in 17 playoff games.
The Marlies re-signed him on 3 July 2019. In the 2019–20 season, he played exclusively in the AHL, posting two goals and 14 points in 47 games before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On 2 April 2020, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed him as an undrafted free agent to a two-year, entry-level NHL contract. While the AHL remained shut down, Rubīns returned to Europe on loan to the Frederikshavn White Hawks of the Danish Metal Ligaen, where he had two goals and five points in 21 games.
