Brodie grew up on a family farm between Dresden and Chatham, Ontario, and played minor hockey in the Dresden Minor Hockey Association. At age 11, he participated in the Toronto Maple Leafs Skills Challenge, going 4-for-4 in the accuracy shooting drill. He played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Saginaw Spirit and Barrie Colts before turning professional in 2010. Brodie established himself as a top prospect with the Flames' AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, leading the team's defencemen in scoring and representing the Heat at the 2011 AHL All-Star Game. He scored his first NHL goal on November 27, 2011, against goaltender Niklas Bäckström of the Minnesota Wild. Brodie emerged as one of the Flames' top defencemen, averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game, and earned an invitation to represent Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Championship. He signed a five-year, $23.25 million contract extension with the Flames in 2014. After ten years in Calgary, Brodie joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent in 2020, signing a four-year, $20 million deal. His tenure in Toronto was marked by injuries, including an oblique injury and a rib issue that placed him on injured reserve. He left Toronto in 2024 and signed with the Chicago Blackhawks, but struggled in his first season, posting 2 goals and 10 points in 54 games.
