Marner grew up in Thornhill, Ontario, as a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He played minor hockey for the Vaughan Kings and Don Mills Flyers, then joined the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) after being drafted 19th overall in 2013.
