Jhonas Enroth
Swedish goaltender who won gold at the 2013 World Championships.
Jhonas Erik Enroth is a Swedish professional ice hockey goaltender, born on 25 June 1988. He currently plays for Örebro HK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). Between 2009 and 2016, he appeared in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, and Toronto Maple Leafs. On the international stage, Enroth has represented Sweden at three World Championships, winning gold in 2013, and also played at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Enroth was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round, 46th overall, on 24 June 2006. In 2007, he was one of four candidates for the Elitserien Rookie of the Year award, which ultimately went to goaltender Daniel Larsson. During the 2007–08 regular season in Sweden, he led all goaltenders in save percentage and goals against average. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Sabres on 31 May 2008 and was considered the top European goaltender in the 2006 draft. His first NHL preseason appearance came on 22 September, playing half the game for Buffalo.
Recalled from the Portland Pirates on 22 February 2009, Enroth was sent back without playing. Another recall came on 4 November 2009, and he made his NHL debut on 7 November against the Boston Bruins, allowing four goals in a loss. He did not play again at the NHL level until 3 November 2010, when he saw 20 minutes of ice time against the Bruins, giving up three goals on twelve shots for his second loss. His first NHL win came in a shootout against the Toronto Maple Leafs on 6 November 2010, with a 3–2 score. His second win also came via shootout, against the New Jersey Devils on 10 November 2010. On 15 February 2011, he won a ten-round shootout against the Montreal Canadiens, becoming the first NHL goaltender to record his first three wins all in shootouts.
Enroth earned his first NHL shutout on 30 March 2011, stopping 23 shots against the New York Rangers. He was named one of the NHL’s three stars for the week ending 3 April 2011. On 26 April 2011, he made his playoff debut, relieving Ryan Miller and playing most of the third period, allowing one goal on eight shots. At the 2012 NHL Awards, he was named to the All-Rookie Team, the sixth Sabres player to receive that honor.
During the 2012–13 NHL lockout, Enroth stayed in Sweden. He practiced with his original club, Huddinge IK, and played two games for them in the Hockeyettan.
