The artwork of Tool's 2001 album Lateralus is by the painter Alex Grey, with Adam Jones as art director. Jones had noticed Grey's work and went on to use it on Lateralus, 10,000 Days and Fear Inoculum.

Grey later designed the 3-D edition cover of 10,000 Days and much of the artwork for Fear Inoculum. His work draws on religious symbols such as auras and chakras, and Tool's videos have also been made with him.
