Lore & Background
Carey was born in Lawrence, Kansas, and started on snare drum in the school band at ten, moving to a full kit two years later. He played in his high school jazz band in Paola, Kansas, and jazz went on to shape his approach to rock drumming. At the University of Missouri–Kansas City he widened his percussion studies into geometry, science, metaphysics and the occult, and he names Tony Williams, John Bonham and his friend Neil Peart as the drummers he channels. After college he moved to Portland, Oregon, and then to Los Angeles, where he worked as a studio drummer. Looking for new techniques, he studied tabla with Aloke Dutta, who plays on the live version of "Pushit" on Salival.
