As Sauron focuses his gaze upon Minas Tirith, he unleashes an army of Orcs, Haradrim, and Easterlings to overwhelm the city's defenses. The Steward Denethor prepares for war but is increasingly tormented by visions from the seeing stone, leading to a tragic decline in leadership. Meanwhile, messengers are sent to Rohan, though many perish before reaching King Théoden. The defense relies on the courage of the Rangers of Ithilien and the loyal soldiers of the city's towers. When the enemy breaches the gates, the fighting moves from the outer walls to the inner terraces. The arrival of the Witch-king atop a fell beast signals the height of terror, yet it also sets the stage for his eventual downfall by hands he did not expect.

Pippin stood amidst the smoke and ash on the sixth circle, watching the black banners rise against the grey sky. The sound of war drums vibrated through the stone beneath his boots, a rhythm that matched the hammering of his own heart. Above him, Gandalf shouted orders over the roar of fire, his staff glowing faintly in the gloom. A shadow passed overhead, silent and cold, but Pippin did not flinch; he tightened his grip on the halberd, knowing that if they fell here, all hope for the West would die with them.

Reader's Guide

The conflict begins when messengers arrive warning of a massive host marching from Mordor toward the White City. Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, prepares his defenses while sending Faramir to Osgiliath, which falls quickly under assault. Gandalf arrives with Pippin and urges resistance against despair among the weary garrison. Sauron's forces breach the outer walls, forcing defenders onto the inner terraces. The Nazgûl ride over the battlefield, sowing terror among the soldiers. At this critical moment, Denethor succumbs to madness brought on by the Palantír and burns himself atop a pyre meant for his late son Boromir. Hope seems lost until Théoden King rides from Rohan across the Pelennor Fields in full armor. The charge of the horsemen breaks the enemy lines just as Aragorn arrives with the Army of the Dead from the Paths of the Dead. Together, they rout the Orcs and Easterlings, securing victory for Gondor though at great cost to both kingdoms involved.
