In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the bare branches of Weathertop as Frodo clutched his side. The cold steel had pierced him, and darkness crept at the edges of his vision. They stumbled forward, hobbits leaning on each other, until the grey stone walls of Elrond's house appeared in the valley mist.

Reader's Guide

The journey begins when Frodo leaves Bag End, accompanied by his gardener and two cousins. They travel through the Shire until reaching Bree, where they meet Strider at the inn. After learning of the Black Riders' pursuit, the group flees into the wild lands beyond the Old Forest. Danger peaks on Weathertop Hill during a stormy night when Frodo is struck by a deadly blade. Strider leads them to the Ford of Bruinen, where the river's magical waters halt the pursuing Wraiths temporarily. Finally, they cross the Misty Mountains' foothills and arrive at Imladris. Elrond heals the hobbit's wound, allowing the Ringbearer to survive. This trek transforms the naive hobbits into hardened travelers ready for the Council that follows.
