The land is divided into four farthings: Westfarthing, Southfarthing, Eastfarthing, and the more rugged Buckland. Its geography is characterized by gentle slopes, hedgerows, and small rivers, creating an idyllic environment for farming and gardening. For centuries, the Hobbits maintained a policy of isolationism, avoiding involvement in the wars between Elves, Dwarves, and Men. They believed their small stature made them invisible to evil powers. However, this peace was tested when the One Ring arrived at Bag End, drawing the attention of Sauron’s servants. The Shire eventually faced direct invasion during the Scouring, where Saruman’s agents attempted to industrialize the land. The Hobbits rose up to defend their home, marking a significant shift from passive isolation to active defense of their way of life.
