Rouge
A wise mage and guardian of the Beast Woods who guides the boy destined to save the world.
Rouge is a fictional character from the Japanese light novel and anime series 'The Faraway Paladin' (Saihate no Paladin), created by Kanata Yanagino. She is a powerful mage who lived long after the era of the five legendary heroes, and she serves as the guardian of the Beast Woods. Unlike the heroes of old who fought against the great calamity, Rouge was driven by a desire to protect and understand the balance of the world. After years of seclusion, fate brought her into contact with Will (William) G. Maryblood, whom she mentors and guides. Her magic is not just a tool for combat but a reflection of her profound understanding of the world's spiritual and elemental forces.

Reader's Guide
Rouge is a legendary mage and one of the five heroes who saved the world from an ancient catastrophe. She begins as a mysterious figure living in isolation before becoming Altair's primary mentor and guardian. Her powers are vast, encompassing high-level elemental magic, healing, and defensive barriers. However, her true strength lies in her wisdom and ability to guide others through spiritual growth rather than just combat prowess. Rouge's arc is defined by her transition from a detached observer of history to an active participant in shaping the future. Her defining moments include accepting Altair as a ward, fighting alongside him against undead threats, and reconciling with her own past regrets.
Cosmic Architecture
The narrative foundation rests upon a vast Multiverse comprising interconnected parallel dimensions that stretch from the Big Bang to the End of Time. This expansive reality is shaped by two opposing metaphysical forces: Law, representing perpetual stasis, and Chaos, embodying ever-changing disorder. Neither force can dominate completely without erasing all life; therefore, a third entity known as the Cosmic Balance enforces necessary limits to ensure continued existence. While these principles are implied to be non-sentient, they manifest through god-like beings who empower mortal heralds. The Eternal Champion serves as an appointed paladin of this Balance, existing in every world and age to keep Law and Chaos in check. Though often unaware of their divine mandate or struggling against it, the Champion must intervene whenever one force gains excessive power. This duty inevitably surrounds them with strife and destruction, even if they experience long periods of relative quiet between cosmic crises.
The Archetypal Hero
All distinct incarnations of the Eternal Champion are facets of a single semi-conscious being, functioning as a platonic archetype across the Multiverse. Most Champions emerge as peerless fighters or generals bound by an unbreakable connection to a sentient weapon known as the Black Sword, which shifts its form for each specific hero. Their journeys are frequently aided by an Eternal Companion and an Eternal Consort, who represent aspects of semi-divine figures serving as sidekicks and love interests. This recurring pattern is highlighted by naming conventions where many characters share J or C initials, alongside numerous members belonging to the extensive von Bek dynasty. While space and time travel allow species like the Eldrens to interact with various Champions across ages, strict cosmic laws prevent two Champions from coexisting in the same situation to avoid damaging reality's fabric.
Diverse Incarnations
The character manifests through a wide array of individuals facing unique historical and speculative challenges. Konrad Arflane navigates a post-apocalyptic ice age on Earth, leading an expedition on an ice schooner to recover ancestral knowledge in New York. Asquiol of Pompeii commands a human colonization force into a parallel universe, fighting for supremacy against hostile natives before becoming part of the Von Bek saga. Captain Oswald Bastable, a British officer from the early 20th century, finds himself transported through alternative timelines where global conflicts played out differently, establishing prototypes for the steampunk subgenre. Jherek Carnelian represents one of the last humans near the End of Time; initially hedonistic and morally obnoxious, his life transforms upon falling in love with a time-traveling woman from the 19th century.
Narrative Exceptions
While cosmic laws generally forbid two Eternal Champions from occupying the same reality simultaneously to prevent severe damage to the fabric of existence, cataclysmic events create necessary exceptions. During the end of a Cycle of Cycles or an invasion by hostile entities from entirely separate multiverses, different incarnations of the Champion may join forces to thwart these impending threats. In such dire circumstances, they might temporarily merge their individual bodies into a single demigod possessing immense power. This mechanism underscores the critical role the Champions play in preserving the Multiverse against existential dangers that transcend normal temporal boundaries. Even though projects like the planned series for Aubec, Earl of Malador, were aborted and reincorporated as preludes to other sagas, the overarching theme remains consistent: the Champion is a necessary agent of balance who must adapt to the specific demands of their era.
