Killing an Arab

The Cure's debut single, a short retelling of Camus's The Stranger.

"Killing an Arab" is the Cure's first single. It was recorded alongside Three Imaginary Boys (1979) but left off that album, then included on the band's first US album, Boys Don't Cry (1980).

Lore & Background

Robert Smith described it as a brief poetic take on key moments of Albert Camus's 1942 novel The Stranger, in which Meursault shoots an Arab on a beach. Melody Maker heard a link to Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Hong Kong Garden", with a Moorish-sounding guitar figure in place of that song's Oriental riff.
