Amityville

The 1975 Long Island haunting that the Warrens are best known for.

Amityville is the case for which paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren are best known. In 1975 a Long Island couple, George and Kathy Lutz, said their house was haunted by a violent demonic presence so intense that it drove them out after less than a month.

Background

The reported haunting became Jay Anson's 1977 book The Amityville Horror and the long film series that followed, and the Warrens' account is partly dramatised in the opening of The Conjuring 2. Their version has long been disputed: investigators, eyewitnesses and forensic evidence contradicted it, and in 1979 a lawyer said he, Anson and the occupants had invented much of the story over many bottles of wine.
