Magic

Will made real: the Builders' broken legacy.

Magic in Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire is the power of a mind's will or belief to change reality directly. It exists because the Builders altered quantum-mechanical decay with a machine known as the Wheel of Osheim.

Background

The Builders changed some universal constants slightly, strengthening the link between what a person wants and what is. The wheel was never turned off, and the world kept moving toward a point at which reality itself would break. After the Day of the Thousand Suns the origins of magic were lost and it became wrapped in superstition, and distinct schools formed, among them fire-magic, mind-magic and dream-magic. Its users include Sageous, Corion, Chella, Gog, Kelem and the Dead King.
