The CIA Safehouse Break-in

Bourne tracks Conklin to the Treadstone safe house in Paris and resigns at gunpoint.

The CIA Safehouse Break-in is the climax of The Bourne Identity (2002), in which Jason Bourne breaks into the Treadstone safe house in Paris. After abandoning a planned meeting with Alexander Conklin, Bourne puts a tracking device on Conklin's car and follows it to the safe house. Inside, he holds Conklin and the logistics technician Nicky Parsons at gunpoint.

Lore & Background

Conklin reveals his association with Treadstone and presses Bourne to remember his past. In successive flashbacks Bourne recalls his attempt to assassinate the exiled African dictator Wombosi: he had infiltrated Wombosi's yacht but could not kill him while his children were present, fled, and was shot during his escape, losing his memory. Bourne announces that he is resigning from Treadstone and warns Conklin not to follow him.

Reader's Guide

Bourne first agrees by phone to meet Conklin alone in Paris; seeing that Conklin has brought others, he drops the meeting and tracks Conklin's car instead. After the confrontation, agents descend on the safe house and Bourne fights his way out. Conklin is killed by Manheim under Ward Abbott's orders as he leaves, and Abbott later shuts Treadstone down.
