The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena is where the four main male characters of The Big Bang Theory work in science-related jobs, as do Bernadette and Amy. Sheldon Cooper is a senior theoretical physicist there and Leonard Hofstadter an experimental physicist working mainly with lasers; their friends and co-workers Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali complete the group. The Caltech cafeteria is a recurring setting, for instance when Amy and Penny watch Leonard talking with his assistant Alex there.
