Lore & Background

Montreal fans called him "le Grand Orange"; he was the Expos' first star, and the club retired his number in 1993 even though only 518 of his 2,951 games came in an Expos uniform. Texas got him in a trade on March 31, 1980, sending Chris Smith and La Rue Washington the other way, and in 109 games that year he batted .300 with nine homers and 55 RBIs, his first .300 season since 1971. Away from the field he ran the Rusty Staub Foundation, which backs emergency food pantries in New York, and set up a benefit fund for the widows and children of New York police and firefighters. He entered the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.
