Creation

01-for London debuted in 1987 as a weekly arts listings programme for Thames Television, the regional ITV franchise holder. It was created by Tom Gutteridge and Mentorn Films in partnership with Time Out, the London what's-on magazine, and together they co-sponsored a series of annual London arts awards. The first presenters were Richard Jobson, former Skids singer, comedian Neil Mullarkey, and Nikki Groocock. The show covered music, fashion, art, and entertainment, and the London Evening Standard labelled it "yoof TV". Viv Albertine worked behind the camera filming on location across London. Its name came from London's old area dialling code, which changed on 6 May 1990 to 071 and 081. This was Mentorn's first major success, and Gutteridge later sold regional versions to Central Independent Television and Anglia Television.

Later history

By 1989, the presenting team had changed to Fiona Adam and Mark Webster, with Australian author Kathy Lette also taking a turn. The programme held on through late 1991 cuts that shifted documentaries and current affairs out of peak slots for game shows and films, costing 200 jobs and ending three other shows on the south-east network. 01-for London was axed in 1992, replaced by Carlton’s Big City. The Guardian compared the swap to trading a bright yellow curvy Japanese sports car for a dumpy khaki old Ford Fiesta.
