The series was adapted from the writings of H. F. Ellis, which first appeared in Punch and were later published in two books: The Papers of A.J. Wentworth, B.A. (1949) and The Papers of A.J. Wentworth, B.A. (Ret'd) (1962). Arthur Lowe had read selections from the books on Woman's Hour. At Lowe's memorial service, Harry Andrews, who played the headmaster, read a piece from the work. Exterior location filming of the school took place at Box Hill School near Dorking in Surrey, and junior pupils appeared in the opening credits.
