A Scottish television programme, The Jazz Series ran from 1979 to 1981 across four series. Each series featured one host and a resident band, with different guest musicians joining them weekly. In January 2011, Scottish Television uploaded all twenty-one episodes to YouTube, but those videos and their playlist have since been taken down.

Series One
The first series aired in January 1979, presented by Annie Ross, who also served as vocalist and master of ceremonies. The house band was the Pat Smythe Septet. Episode one featured guests Tommy Whittle, Duncan Lamont, Bobby Wellins, Jimmy Hastings, and Scott Madden. Songs performed included "Work song" by Oscar Brown, Jr. and Nat Adderley, "Honeysuckle Rose" by Andy Razaf and Fats Waller, "Children's game" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "The shadow of your smile" by Paul Francis Webster and Johnny Mandel, "Morning mist" by Hank Johnson, and "Four brothers" by Jimmy Giuffre. On-camera personnel included Annie Ross; Eddie Blair on trumpet; Cliff Hardie on trombone; Duncan Lamont on tenor sax; Laurie Hamilton on electric guitar; Neil Cameron on acoustic double bass; Alan Ganley on drums; plus guests Tommy Whittle and Bobby Wellins on tenor sax; Jimmy Hastings on flute and tenor sax; and Scott Madden on piano.
Episode two brought guests Bobby Wishart, Ron Mathewson, and Cathy Brawley. Songs performed were "Milestones" by Miles Davis, "Give me a lass" arranged by Pat Smythe, "The champ" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Scarborough Fair" by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, "Little green apples" by Bobby Russell, and "Bye bye blackbird" by Mort Dixon and Ray Henderson. On-camera personnel included Annie Ross; The Pat Smythe Septet: George Chisholm on trumpet and fluegel horn; Cliff Hardie on trombone; Duncan Lamont on tenor sax and penny whistle; Pat Smythe on piano; Laurie Hamilton on electric guitar; Neil Cameron on acoustic double bass; Bobby Orr on drums; plus Ron Mathewson on acoustic double bass; and The Bobby Wishart Circle with Cathy Brawley on vocal.
Episode three featured the Mike Carr Trio and Jimmy Deuchar. Songs performed were "Minor event", "My ship" by Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill, "Love's last goodbye" by Mike Carr, and "I hear music" by Frank Loesser and Burton Lane.
