Overview

Broadcast live from Assembly Square in Cardiff Bay, Wales at Six and all other ITV Wales news programmes originate there, with a North Wales newsroom in Colwyn Bay and a political unit at the Senedd, also in Cardiff Bay. Additional district reporters are stationed in West Wales, Merthyr Tydfil, and Swansea. Jonathan Hill, previously a news reporter and newsreader, became a main anchor for the evening news in February 1994. Andrea Byrne joined as co-anchor in January 2008 after Lucy Owen left for BBC Wales Today. By June 2014, Hill and Byrne were alternating editions of the 6pm programme. Kylie Pentelow replaced Byrne for a year starting in February 2019. Ruth Dodsworth has presented national weather forecasts for ITV Cymru Wales since 2000.

History

When Harlech Television launched in May 1968, it introduced a fully bilingual news service, a first for the ITV network. The weekday 6pm regional news slot was split between two programmes: Y Dydd, broadcast in Welsh, and Report Wales, in English. The arrival of S4C in November 1982 ended HTV’s Welsh-language news output, though the company kept producing Welsh current affairs shows, such as the long-standing Y Byd ar Bedwar. On 1 November 1982, Wales at Six took over from Report Wales as the main English-language news programme. HTV’s news operation was based at Pontcanna studios until it relocated to the Television Centre at Culverhouse Cross in 1990. Over the years, Wales at Six was succeeded by several titles: Wales Tonight in 1994 and again in 2005, HTV News in 1999, ITV Wales News in 2004, and ITV News Cymru Wales in 2013. On 17 September 2013, ITV Wales announced a new weekly half-hour current affairs programme, Newsweek Wales, which would include interviews, analysis, and a review of the week’s top stories. It debuted on Sunday 22 September 2013, airing at lunchtime. A plan to extend the weekday late bulletin to 15 minutes was abandoned. On 28 June 2014, ITV Cymru Wales broadcast from Culverhouse Cross for the final time. Two days later, operations moved to a new base in Cardiff Bay. As part of that move, the title Wales at Six was brought back for the main weekday 6pm programme, returning after a 20-year gap.
