Production
HTV Wales brought in Colin Thomas to produce, write, and direct the series, while Wynford Vaughan-Thomas was already set as the sole presenter. Thomas, whose perspective on Welsh history clashed with Vaughan-Thomas's, was spurred by Colin MacArthur's book to bring on a second presenter. He first proposed feminist historian Angela V. John, but Vaughan-Thomas rejected her outright, so Thomas instead offered Gwyn Williams, whom Vaughan-Thomas accepted with reluctance.
