Plot
The story is set in the year 2000. A group of monks from an island monastery off the coast of the Republic of Ireland defies the Sacrosanctum Concilium and edicts of a future Fourth Vatican Council by celebrating the traditional Tridentine Mass in Latin on the Irish mainland. These masses attract pilgrims from around the world who oppose changes in the Roman Catholic Church, including the denial of Transubstantiation and the requirement that priests wear clerical clothing only on ceremonial occasions. The Vatican, concerned about a potential Counter-Reformation before an interfaith dialogue in Singapore, sends Father Kinsella, an adherent of Liberation theology, to order the monks to comply or face transfer.
