Underground (Armchair Theatre)
A live broadcast marred by an actor's on-air death.
On 30 November 1958, the ITV anthology series Armchair Theatre broadcast the live science-fiction play Underground, written by James Forsyth and based on a novel by Harold Rein. The story follows nuclear holocaust survivors living in the London Underground. The broadcast is remembered because actor Gareth Jones suffered a fatal heart attack during transmission, forcing the cast to improvise the final act. No recording of the play survives.
