1960 Australian TV Version

The Australian version was directed by James Upshaw and broadcast live on ABC's Sydney station, then kinescoped for other ABC stations. It was one of several thrillers produced in early Australian television. The cast included Max Meldrum as the youth, Eric Reiman as Colonel Kralik, Diana Perryman as hostess Joan Bridey, and Owen Weingott as Sten, a disguised Communist head of police. Other cast members included Deryck Barnes, Brian Anderson, Colin Croft, Noni Rathesay, Carlotta Kalmar, Leonard Teale, George Roubiceck, Kenneth Hacker, Custl Korner, Peter Williams, Tony Standen, Barry Davies, Felix Martin, John Bell, and Val Zika. Filming took place at ABC's Sydney studios, with exteriors shot at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport. The Sydney Morning Herald gave a mixed review but praised Max Meldrum as "a superbly terrified fugitive" and Owen Weingott as "excellent" as Sten. The play was bought for US screening by CBS in 1961, along with another Australian play, Outpost.
