Production

Bravo first tried to set a reality show in the Washington, D.C. area with The Real Housewives of D.C., which lasted only one season in 2010. The network gave it another shot with a series initially called Potomac Ensemble, announced on November 11, 2015. The first season premiered on January 17, 2016, with Gizelle Bryant, Ashley Darby, Robyn Dixon, Karen Huger, Charrisse Jackson-Jordan, and Katie Rost. After season two started filming, Rost was let go, and Monique Samuels joined the cast for the season that premiered on April 2, 2017. The third season premiered on April 1, 2018, adding Candiace Dillard Bassett and moving Jackson-Jordan to a friend role; she left after that season. The fourth season, which began filming in August 2018, premiered on May 5, 2019, featuring Dillard’s wedding and Rost as a friend. Rost was not asked back for the reunion or the next season. The fifth season premiered on August 2, 2020, with Wendy Osefo as a new housewife and Jackson-Jordan as a guest. In December 2020, Samuels announced she was leaving despite having a contract for the next season. The sixth season premiered on July 11, 2021, with new housewife Mia Thornton and friend Askale Davis. The seventh season premiered on October 9, 2022, with Davis gone, Jackson-Jordan back as a friend, and Jacqueline Blake joining; Rost and Davis both made guest appearances. The eighth season premiered on November 5, 2023, with new housewife Nneka Ihim and friend Keiarna Stewart, plus Jackson-Jordan again as a friend; Blake appeared as a guest. In March 2024, Dillard Bassett announced she was leaving after six seasons. In April 2024, Dixon confirmed she was fired after eight seasons. In May 2024, Ihim confirmed she was leaving after just one season. The ninth season premiered on October 6, 2024, with new housewife Stacey Rusch and new friend Jassi Rideaux, Blake returning as a friend, and Stewart promoted to full-time. Jackson-Jordan left after the eighth season.

Reception

The Real Housewives of Potomac premiered with a Nielsen rating of 1.2 among adults 18–49 and 2.54 million total viewers, a record for any series debut in the franchise. Its first season averaged 2.1 million viewers, marking Bravo’s strongest freshman season since The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010. In February 2024, Bravo reported that the season eight premiere, with delayed viewing, became the show’s most-watched premiere ever at 2.2 million viewers, and the entire season reached 2.7 million across all platforms. Critics have generally responded well. The Hollywood Reporter’s Amy Amatangelo called it high-level escapist TV, praising its diversity and noting viewers can enjoy the ridiculous behavior from a safe distance. ABC News’ Joi-Marie McKenzie highlighted the premiere’s shade-throwing and sharp one-liners as entertaining for franchise fans.

Controversies

During the fifth season, cast member Monique Samuels got into a physical altercation with co-star Candiace Dillard Bassett. Both were charged with second-degree assault in Maryland's District Court of Montgomery County; all charges were later dropped. Samuels did not return for the sixth season despite being asked back. On February 26, 2025, following a guilty conviction for a DUI in 2024, Karen Huger was sentenced to two years in prison with one year probation and began serving time immediately; she was released early on September 2. In October 2025, Wendy Osefo and her husband were arrested in Westminster, Maryland, and charged with multiple counts of fraud, stemming from allegations that they falsely reported a burglary at their home in April 2024.
