Format

Deal or No Deal Island is a reality competition where a group of contestants take part in excursions to find briefcases that have been hidden around the Banker’s private island, a location that is not publicly identified within the Panama islands. Each episode, the contestants engage in excursions that involve physical challenges designed to retrieve briefcases, each containing a different cash amount. Some challenges feature “red cases,” which can either allow a contestant to take another player’s briefcase or hold a very small cash value. Contestants who end up with the lowest-valued briefcases are considered at risk and may be chosen to take on the Banker’s Challenge. The contestant or team that collects the highest total case value earns immunity for that evening and gets to decide which lower-ranking contestant will face the Banker.

The Banker’s Temple is a standard high-stakes version of Deal or No Deal played between the Banker and the contestant selected by the excursion winner. During each round, the player must open one or more cases, which reveals their values and removes them from play. After the round ends, the Banker makes an offer. The player can either accept the offer to end the game or reject it and continue playing. If the player accepts an offer that is higher than the value inside their chosen case, or if they play through every round and their case ends up being higher than the Banker’s final offer, they stay in the competition and must eliminate one of the other players. If neither condition is met, the player is eliminated. Regardless of the outcome, the amount of the accepted offer—or the value of the player’s case if the game is played to completion—is added to the Final Case, a growing prize pot that the last remaining player will play for in one final game of Deal or No Deal during the season finale. If a player receives a record-breaking offer from the Banker, the Banker may, at their own discretion, offer a cash bonus that the player can keep no matter what happens in the Banker’s Temple or the overall competition. In certain situations, accepting this bonus requires the player to leave the game immediately.

Season 1

The 13 contestants on the show include Claudia Jordan, a reality TV personality who previously appeared as a case model on Deal or No Deal, and Rob Mariano, who has competed on Survivor five times and The Amazing Race twice. In 2025, Mariano also took part in the third season of the Peacock series The Traitors. During the first half of Season 1’s two-part finale, the final four players had to make their way through the Banker’s Garden, a jungle maze, to find and retrieve briefcases with unknown cash amounts. The challenge began with a riddle that, once solved, gave access to a map showing where the briefcases were hidden. Amy solved the riddle first and entered the maze. Rob then broke the rules by looking at Amy’s game board to see the solution. Host Joe Manganiello stopped the game immediately to address the violation. Even though Rob broke the rules, he was allowed to keep playing, but he received a time penalty. The penalty was set to the time gap between when Amy entered the maze and when the next contestant entered, which turned out to be three minutes. This meant Rob had to wait until every other player had started their maze run before his penalty time began to count down.

Production

NBC ordered the series on May 12, 2023. Joe Manganiello was named host that September. The show's premiere was set for February 26, 2024, announced in November 2023. Contestants were revealed on January 8, 2024. A second season was ordered on May 7, 2024, and premiered on January 7, 2025. On December 2, 2025, reports indicated NBC cancelled the series after two seasons, with Endemol Shine North America shifting focus to reviving the original Deal or No Deal.

Reception

Critics were split on Deal or No Deal Island. Fletcher Peters of The Daily Beast called it a "welcome twist on the original romp" that was "easy" to watch, but described the format as a "dreamlike, messy, absurdist concept" akin to a 30 Rock joke, ultimately wishing for a reboot of the original show instead. Andy Dehnart was harsher, labeling it "an awkward marriage of two different formats" that leaned too heavily on the Deal or No Deal elements. He criticized the lengthy Banker's Challenge segments and the editing quality, though he conceded he was never a fan of the original game's slow pacing.
